Just two and a half hours from Athens, the capital of ‘olive country’ Messinia, is an ideal destination for an invigorating weekend. A traditional yet modern coastal city in the Greek hinterland, the capital of the Peloponnese has become a popular tourist destination in recent years, offering everything from sun-drenched dips in the sea and leisurely late-night lounging at seaside cafes or in the picturesque old town to enriching cultural and natural adventures, weather permitting.
There are many wonderful sites, landmarks and monuments within the historic city, as well as a wonderful food and drink scene to enjoy before, during and after the sightseeing. The city also serves as an ideal base for excursions to the stunning coastal towns of Koroni, Methoni, and Pylos (with its historic bay). The crucial archaeological site of Ancient Messene is also a very short drive away to the north. The magnificent and medieval Mani region begins just south of Kalamata. Staying in the city allows you to explore the dramatic landscapes and tower houses of the Outer (Messinian) Mani.
While a bit further, Kalamata is a feasible base for day trips to the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Mystras (Byzantine city), and Olympia (birthplace of the Olympic Games). Nafplio, with its charming old town and impressive fortresses, is also a longer but manageable day trip option.
